Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R – Richvale) and 19 Members of Congress sent a letter to Twitter’s Chief Executive Officer, Parag Agrawal, regarding their concerns with news censorship and subsequent meddling in the 2020 presidential election. On October 14, 2020, the New York Post broke a story about a laptop belonging to Hunter Biden, the son of then-candidate Joe Biden. The laptop reportedly contained damning emails from Hunter Biden, showing how he exploited his connections to his then-Vice President father to further his own career interests, leveraged his connections for massive paychecks from foreign entities, and indicated that a portion of those foreign funds would pay “The Big Guy”. Twitter then suspended the New York Post’s account for more than two weeks and blocked users from sharing the article because of what it called concerns about the “origins of the material.” The material has been verified and there is an ongoing criminal investigation of Hunter Biden because of the material disclosed in his discarded computer files.

Washington, D.C. – In the wake of increasing violence against Ukrainian civilians by invading Russian forces, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R – Richvale) voted in support of several pieces of legislation that reaffirms the United States’ support of our ally, Ukraine. On Wednesday, the House passed H.R. 7276, the Ukraine Invasion War Crimes Deterrence and Accountability Act. This bill ensures a coordinated effort by the U.S. to collect evidence to be used to prosecute Russian war crimes in Ukraine. An extensive record-keeping and evidence-tracking system of prior Russian war crimes will hopefully deter future attacks.

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R – Richvale) commented on the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) and California Department of Water Recourses’ (DWR) announcement that they have issued a Temporary Urgency Change Petition (TUCP) to California water operations. The new order allows DWR and BOR to conserve more water in Shasta and Oroville, reduce Delta outflow requirements for salinity, and reduce the mandatory minimum flows in the river to save water. There had been a TUCP in place for much of the fall, however, BOR and the DWR allowed it to lapse in January. Congressmen LaMalfa, McCarthy, McClintock, Valadao, and Calvert had asked for this additional flexibility to be issued in February in order to store additional water during the winter months.

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R – Richvale) participated in a House Committee on Agriculture hearing titled, “A 2022 Review of the Farm Bill: Energy – Renewable Energy Opportunities in Rural America”. This hearing examined the 2018 Farm Bill energy programs administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA provides several grant and loan opportunities for agriculture-based renewable energy programs, including biofuels (ethanol) and biomass.

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressmen Doug LaMalfa (R – Calif.) and Mike Thompson (D – Calif.) introduced legislation that would exempt thousands of fire victims who are receiving compensation from the Fire Victim Trust from having to pay federal income tax on their settlement money. Additionally, the legislation would prevent survivors from having to pay taxes on the attorney fees that are included in the settlement. These fees account for roughly 30% of the compensation, meaning that without this legislation survivors would be taxed on money that their attorneys keep. The Trust is a $13.5 billion settlement established in July 2020 for survivors of the 2015 Butte Fire, the 2017 North Bay Wildfires, and the 2018 Camp Fire. Although the deadline to file 2021 taxes is April 18, 2022, this legislation would allow survivors to be awarded their exemption retroactively.

Washington D.C. -Today, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) responded to Governor Newsom’s proclamation extending the statewide drought emergency and request that the California Water Board pressure cities and urban water districts move to a Tier 2 drought, meaning they would mandate 10-20% reduction in water use and eliminate water usage of certain ornamental uses. In California, the environment receives roughly 50% of all water in the state, followed by agriculture at 40% and urban/ manufacturing at 10%.
