Transportation & Infrastructure Committee Advances Preventing Disaster Revictimization Act

February 26, 2020

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) released the following statement after the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure passed the Preventing Disaster Revictimization Act with his strong support. This bill would update current law to prevent FEMA from recollecting individual assistance funds from someone who has received a settlement claim.

LaMalfa said: "Victims should be able to receive promised aid from a settlement claim without fear of then losing the individual assistance provided by FEMA in the immediate aftermath of a disaster because of a turf battle. This has not been the case for Camp Fire victims, who have had to worry that FEMA would require them to pay back the individual assistance given to them. With the help of Ranking Member Sam Graves, this measure will make sure that disaster victims can keep the compensation they have received. I urge Speaker Pelosi to immediately bring this legislation to the House floor for final passage."
