Rep. LaMalfa Welcomes Congressional Art Competition Winner to D.C.

July 16, 2014

Washington, DC – Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) recently Jackie Scarry of Palo Cedro to the Capitol to recognize her as the 2014 winner of the Congressional Art Competition for the First Congressional District of California. Each spring, the Congressional Institute hosts a nationwide art competition to recognize young artists within each district.

Jackie will be a senior at Foothill High School in the fall, where she is one of two students enrolled in Advanced Placement Art. After graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in veterinarian medicine and minor in art. Her piece, titled "Chaotic Beauty," is a colorful and intricate watercolor of a horse. Her artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year alongside other winning entries from across the country.

"It was an honor to meet Miss Scarry, who demonstrates the incredible talent among the youth of the First District. I would like to extend my thanks to all of the students who submitted their creative works for the competition, as well as to the parents and teachers who helped guide the students' artistic abilities," Rep. LaMalfa said.

Last month, she and her father visited Washington, D.C. to attend a reception for the winners from each of the congressional districts. She was able to receive her award from Rep. LaMalfa, as well as tour the U.S. Capitol Building.

Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated in the annual congressional art competition.

Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California's First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
