Rep. LaMalfa Votes to Increase Education Opportunities for Low-Income Families

Washington, DC - Rep. LaMalfa today H.R. 10, legislation to amend and reauthorize the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results (SOAR) Act. The measure provides low income families in the District of Columbia the ability to apply for scholarship funding to attend a private school through the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program.

“Increasing choice in our education system is paramount to ensuring every child in this country, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to receive a quality education. The legislation passed today is a positive step forward in giving parents the resources needed to pave the way to a better future for their children while ensuring no student is forced to attend a low-performing public school, especially when alternatives are right around the corner.”

The bill, which authorizes the appropriation of $60 million to be equally divided between the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program, DC public schools, and DC public charter schools, passed the House by a vote of 240-191.
