Press Release

(Washington, DC) – Today, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued the following statement after the House passed H.Con.Res. 83, which directed the President to terminate the use of United States Armed Forces to engage in hostilities in or against Iran.

LaMalfa said: “The President was right to take out Qassem Soleimani, the Iranian general with the blood of hundreds of Americans on his hands. The strike was necessary to prevent further attacks and defend our security. The President does not want war with Iran, and twice in the past year he has shown significant restraint when responding to Iranian attacks against the United States military.

This resolution by the Democrat majority ignores the President’s constitutional authority as commander-in-chief to protect American interests, serving as another example of their choosing divisive legislation to continue an anti-Trump agenda. If it were in place, it would hamper this President, or any other, to move quickly and nimbly to protect our troops and military assets if attacked, endangering our soldiers and what they are defending. Waiting for Congress to act further risks Americans and our allies in a short-term attack.

This effort isn’t going anywhere and defies the legitimate concerns of the American people. By passing this resolution, Democrats have put their political interests above our national security, choosing to undermine the President’s power during a time when our nation should be united against a common threat.”

Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California’s First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
