(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) released the following statement after the House passed H. J. Res 17 which would retroactively remove the deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. This same bill was passed by the House in 2020 and was not considered in the U.S. Senate.
LaMalfa said: "Regardless of your thoughts on the Equal Rights Amendment, the deadline for the states to ratify the amendment expired four decades ago. By passing this resolution, House Democrats are virtue signaling and trying to take a shortcut around what is required in our constitutional amendment process. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg acknowledged in September 2019 that a completely new effort to ratify the ERA would be constitutionally required. Those who want to pass an ERA will need to start this process from the beginning. Today's vote mocks the intentionally high bar set by our Founders to make changes to our precious Constitution.
Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California's First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
