LaMalfa Opposes Pelosi’s Second Partisan Wish List

October 1, 2020

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa issues the following statement after voting against H.R. 925, Speaker Pelosi's second partisan coronavirus package this year. This bill is estimated to cost the American taxpayer $2.4 trillion and was drafted behind closed doors without Republican input.

LaMalfa said: "At a time when Main Street is shuttered, children are deprived from attending school, and local governments are still stretching their budgets to the max, Speaker Pelosi is unwilling to negotiate a commonsense compromise to benefit the American people. Republicans have been trying to reach an agreement with the Speaker for many weeks. Instead, the Speaker chose to pass a wish list of far-left priorities -- another messaging stunt – intended to prop-up the vulnerable members of her party headed into Election Day. Trillions of dollars in new spending will not only stop the economic progress we've made in the last few months, but also be used to fund dangerous programs, like letting felons out of prison, providing stimulus checks to illegal immigrants, defunding police, and federalizing the electoral process. In reality, this bill as is will never become law, and more importantly, will not provide the help Americans are asking for."

Provisions in H.R. 925 include:

  • Defunding the police by removing $600 million from the original Heroes Act intended for the COPS Hiring program and state and local law enforcement assistance.
  • Allowing illegal immigrants to receive direct stimulus payments because the bill does not require social security number verification.
  • Removing safeguards in the Paycheck Protection Program that would prevent taxpayer money from bailing out Planned Parenthood.
  • Mandating a blanket release for certain covered federal prisoners and alleged criminals, while imposing a high burden for the government to prove they present a risk of harm to society upon release.
  • Federalizing elections, with only five weeks to election day, by including stringent, impossible to achieve mandates on how states must run elections, including early voting, no ID requirement for in-person voting, same-day registration, and no excuse vote by mail without safeguards or restrictions on ballot harvesting.
  • Providing a tax break for millionaires and billionaires by repealing SALT limitations for 2020.
  • Virtually rewriting SNAP policy and permanently disallows rule-making pertaining to work requirements and eligibility.
  • Pushing back the deadlines for the Census and delays final counting.
  • Failing to include sensible liability reforms for our front-line providers.
  • Not including school choice and prohibits funds from supporting educational freedom for families.
