LaMalfa Opposes Job Killing Bill by Democrats

March 16, 2021

(Washington, D.C.) Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued the following statement in opposition to H.R. 842, the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, radical legislation designed to force millions of American workers into one-size-fits-all union contracts.

Rep. LaMalfa said, "This bill is all about expanding government control over workers, going even further than California's radical AB 5 which continues to be modified with exclusions and exceptions in a vain attempt to become workable. The impact on the American workplace would be a hammer blow to the independence and innovation that is foundational to this country's greatness. The PRO Act will effectively end franchising and independent contracting and props up big labor by repealing right-to-work legislation. It removes secret ballot protections currently used in union elections, and ushers in countless other wish list items. It is yet another example of Speaker Pelosi's Democrat leadership abandoning any claim to working for the American people, as they continue to cater to their far-left political base."

The PRO Act is very similar to California's AB 5 that was passed into law in 2019. This legislation forces independent contractors to become employees, even for temporary jobs such as website design or technical support. New Federal requirements would eliminate "right-to-work" laws in every state and institute "card checks" to establish a union, rather than fair elections with secret ballots that allow workers to vote their conscience. Additionally, H.R. 892 would open companies up to being sued by illegal immigrants. Despite being billed as supposedly "pro-worker," this legislation would force companies to disclose the personal information of their employees to union representatives, including their home address.

Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California's First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
