LaMalfa Opposes Democrats Latest Elections Takeover Bill
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) voted against H.R. 5746 – The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. In what was originally supposed to be a NASA-related bill, just last night Democrats gutted the bill and amended in over 700 pages of changes to how states administer elections. This hybrid bill was then rushed to the floor for consideration in less than 24 hours in a ruthless attempt by Democrats to fundamentally change our Republic, nationalize elections, and ultimately overthrow the Senate Filibuster.
Some of the outrageous provisions in this legislation include disregarding state-passed voter ID laws and prohibiting IDs as a condition to vote by mail, as well as giving the US Attorney General, a partisan political appointee, unilateral authority to overwrite state election laws. This bill also creates a 6:1 funding match to benefit candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, meaning that for contributions of $200, the federal government will give campaigns an additional $1,200. This would give billions of public dollars to political campaigns across the country – Speaker Nancy Pelosi would receive up to $7.2 million in public funds for her reelection campaign, and another version would have rewarded Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer with $44.1 million to fund his reelection!
"This bill is an attack on our Republic and our political process. In the 2020 election, which had the highest voter turnout in 120 years, 94% of voters reported that the voting process was ‘easy'. There is no systematic ‘voter suppression' in our country. Voting is a constitutional right for American citizens, but that doesn't mean that we should throw out any rules or regulations regarding voting integrity and accountability. Voter ID, signature verification, and ending elections on election night is common sense, yet all are under attack in this bill. Additionally, the Democrats again are telling taxpayers that the money the government forcibly collects from them now has to go to politicians, especially ones they oppose, to run campaigns- that's sickening!" said Congressman LaMalfa.
Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California's First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
