LaMalfa Issues Statement on Tax Day

Apr 17, 2018
Press Release
(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued the following statement on April 17th, the last day for individuals to file their federal income tax returns. This is the last year that individuals and families will have to file on the old tax code. The changes made under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will take effect next year.
LaMalfa said: “Today is a day that Americans should be celebrating. Not because it’s tax day, but because it’s the last year that you’ll have to file under our old, outdated tax code. Starting next year, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will take full effect, meaning the process of filing taxes for most Americans will be far simpler. There’s a lot to look forward to, such as lower tax rates for all Americans, nearly doubled Standard Deduction, and a doubled Child Tax Credit, to name a few. While some are still trying to market this historic tax bill as Armageddon or crumbs, all I’ve witnessed are more companies handing out bonuses and investing in their employees each day. Many people are already seeing more money in their paychecks each month. This time next year, the vast majority of Americans will have a simpler tax filing process to look forward to, as well as more money in their returns.”
Some Highlights of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that will take effect in 2019 include:
  • Lower tax rates for all Americans
    • Typical family of 4 earning $75,000 annually will see a tax cut of more than $2,000.
  • Nearly doubled Standard Deduction
    • From $6,500 to $12,000 for individuals.
    • From $13,000 to $24,000 for married couples.
  • Doubles the Child Tax Credit from $1,000 to $2,000.
    • Also preserved the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit and Adoption Tax Credit.
  • A simpler process that will cut down on the yearly hassle of filing your taxes.
  • Repeals Obamacare’s ineffective individual health insurance mandate, restoring freedom for families to buy the health care plan that’s right for them.
