LaMalfa Issues Statement on Release of FISA Memo

February 2, 2018

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued the following statement after President Trump approved the release of a classified Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) memo authored by the House Intelligence Committee. The memo contains reports of misconduct by high level officials at the FBI involving the abuse of government surveillance tools in the 2016 Presidential election.

LaMalfa said: "I read the classified FISA memo a few weeks ago, along with many of my colleagues in the House. It was instantly clear that the contents of this document needed to be released to the public – the American people deserve to see what's going on. High ranking officials at the FBI abused government surveillance tools in order to undermine our political process. The origins of an investigation into our Presidential election are tainted by partisan bias. To those that suggest this memo is merely intended to undermine the FBI, I ask you – should the federal government not be held accountable for weaponizing foreign surveillance tools against a political party based on partisan propaganda? This is not an indictment of the many great patriots working at the FBI and DOJ, but those complicit in this activity should face stern punishment in order to restore confidence in America's intelligence apparatus. The misconduct outlined in this report is deeply troubling, and the American people should have the opportunity to issue judgement."
