LaMalfa Issues Statement on Newly-Released Disaster Aid Package in the Senate

May 23, 2019
(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued the following statement after the Senate released the text of a disaster aid package which would provide $19.1 billion for states affected by disasters in 2018. This includes areas impacted by the Carr Fire and Camp Fire in Northern California. Paradise will be eligible for an additional $150 million in rural development funding. The measure will be considered in the Senate shortly before being sent to the House.
LaMalfa said: "After a lengthy process, Senate leadership has done what was needed – put a good faith disaster aid package up for consideration that can actually pass both chambers. I'm happy to see real progress with this process after countless hours working with Republicans and Democrats from both chambers. The communities impacted by the Carr Fire, Camp Fire, as well as disasters in other states around the country are counting on a timely resolution. With thousands of people from Paradise and the surrounding area having been displaced from their homes for months and residing in nearby towns, or any housing they can find, it will be a welcome relief. That's why I worked with Senator Diane Feinstein to include language in the bill that will allow Governor Newsom to certify Paradise's immediate population as 5,000, instead of 27,000. This will make the city eligible for rural development grants that can help with recovery, such as housing and wastewater projects. This is a good compromise – importantly helping our communities recover as quickly as possible. I thank my Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle for coming to an agreement on this important legislation and I look forward to voting for it in the House once the Senate sends it to us, then to the President's desk."
