LaMalfa: Democrats Refuse to Let Wasteful High Speed Rail Project Die

Press Release

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Rich vale) released the following statement after the Biden administration announced it will return nearly $1 billion in federal funds to the boondoggle California High-Speed Rail (CAHSR) project. This funding was cancelled in 2019 by the Trump Administration because it repeatedly failed to comply with its grant agreement and had failed to make reasonable progress on the project.
LaMalfa said, “Despite the CAHSR project being a failure by almost every conceivable metric, pork barrel supporting Democrats refuse to let this pet project die. The project is years behind schedule and billions over budget, has innumerable obstacles before it can be used, and by the best estimates more than a decade away from any chance of completion. Instead of continuing to pour billions into a lost investment, the Biden administration should spend taxpayer money on worthwhile infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, ports, waterways and airports.”
Earlier this week, LaMalfa introduced an amendment with his Republican colleague Representative Michelle Steel (CA-48) during the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee votes. This surface transportation legislative amendment would divert all federal funding, including the $3.5 billion already obligated, for California’s failed High Speed Rail (CAHSR) project towards the successful Railway-Highway Crossings Program that has helped rural and urban areas improve highway and railroad at-grade crossings. The amendment was defeated by the Committee by a vote of 30 – 38.
