LaMalfa and House Colleagues Gain Access to Democrats’ Secretive Impeachment Hearing, Demand Transparency

October 23, 2019
(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued the following statement after he and fellow Republican members of the House entered the sensitive compartmented information facility (SCIF) in the basement of the U.S. Capitol and demanded transparency on proceedings related to the impeachment investigation into President Trump.
LaMalfa said: "Some of my House colleagues and I quietly and orderly gained access to the SCIF today. When we entered the room, Adam Schiff and House Democrats immediately ended the hearing and left the room, bringing the witness along with him. Why is an unclassified deposition being conducted with such secrecy that sitting Members of Congress are not allowed in? Out of 435 Members of the House of Representatives and 325 million Americans, why does Adam Schiff get to be the sole arbiter of all-things impeachment-related? Throughout both the Nixon and Clinton impeachment proceedings, the House conducted itself in an open and bipartisan manner – that couldn't be farther from the case today. The public deserves transparency during this process – it shouldn't be hidden from the American people in the basement of the U.S. Capitol."
