House Passes Resolution to Remove Deadline for ERA
(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) released the following statement after the House passed H.J.Res 79 which would retroactively remove the deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
LaMalfa said: “Regardless of your thoughts on the ERA, the deadline for the states to ratify it expired four decades ago. By passing this resolution, House Democrats are trying to take a shortcut around a constitutional process. Even Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg acknowledged in September 2019 that a new effort to ratify the ERA would be constitutionally required. Those who want to pass an ERA will need to start this process from the beginning, but until then, this measure is void and invalid.”
