House Democrats Vote to Weaken the President and Embolden Iran

January 30, 2020

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued the following statement after the House passed H.R. 5543, the ‘No War Against Iran Act', as an amendment to H.R. 550.

LaMalfa said: "This legislation is partisan, hurts our national security, and puts our troops at risk. The President should be able to quickly act against our adversaries, but this bill keeps him from doing so. Over the past several years, Iran has accelerated its program to build nuclear weapons, constructed new missile bases to strike Israel, and trained new militias to destabilize Iraq and assault American forces based there. More than any time since 1979, the President must have the ability to respond. By passing this bill, House Democrats have sent a message to our enemies and our regional allies that America is flinching in the face of conflict. That is dangerous." LaMalfa said, "Additionally, Democratic leadership broke with tradition and intentionally denied Republicans the ability to provide a differing opinion on this legislation. Partisanship has continued to distract Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats from working in the best interests of the American people and finding a bipartisan consensus on how to tackle Iran. Their hate for the President is not conducive for making good policy."
