Congressman LaMalfa Applauds Passage of the PHONE Act

July 20, 2021

(Washington, DC) – Congressman LaMalfa issued the following statement he voted in favor of the H.R. 678, the PHONE Act. This bill would add a moratorium on land line phone number reassignment in a disaster area for one year after the date of a disaster declaration. Subscribers may also request that the moratorium period be extended for an additional year. During this period, a number could not be reassigned by a service provider except at the request of the subscriber.

"I have heard countless stories from wildfire victims who have lost their homes about how frustrating it is to have their phone number reassigned after everything they have been through. This is a common-sense, bipartisan bill that will give these natural disaster victims one less thing to deal with. One goal of recovery is to bring back a sense of normalcy, and this bill helping people maintain their phone numbers is a small, good step."

Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California's First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
