House Democrats Fail to Override the President’s Veto

March 26, 2019
(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued the following statement after the House failed to pass a veto message on H.J. Res. 46, which would override the President's veto of a resolution to overturn the President's declaration of a national emergency at the southern border. A two-thirds majority vote in Congress is required to override a Presidential veto. The measure failed by a margin of 248-181. Congressman LaMalfa voted in opposition to overriding the President's veto.
LaMalfa said: "House Democrats' passage of a resolution to terminate the President's national emergency declaration last month was merely a political stunt, and this attempted veto override today is more of the same. I remain unwavering in my support for the President's decision to enforce our laws. Our southern border has been a sieve for illegal immigration, human trafficking, and narcotics for far too long, and the President is right to move to fix it. It's a shame the unwillingness to address this issue by Democrat leadership has led us to this point, but I'm happy to finally see some meaningful progress is being made to secure our southern border and improve our national security."
Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California's First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
