Rep. LaMalfa Votes to Hold Iran, Hezbollah Accountable
Washington, DC – Earlier today, Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) voted in favor of a pair of measures that would ensure Congress has the opportunity to vote on any final deal with Iran regarding their nuclear weapons program, and impose sanctions on any financial institutions which support Hezbollah, a designated terrorist organization that is primarily financed by Iran. Both measures passed the House of Representatives with an overwhelming bipartisan majority.
"Iran and Hezbollah have spent decades attempting to destabilize the Middle East for their own gain. The measures Congress passed today prove our commitment to holding these bad actors accountable," said LaMalfa. "Although the President has the authority to negotiate, the Constitution requires Congressional approval of all treaties. Today's vote ensures that any agreement with Iran must come to Congress for consideration and prevents the President from unilaterally making an agreement that fails to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons in an unstable region of the world."
The Obama Administration has until June 30th, 2015 to finalize any deal with Iran relating to their nuclear weapons program. The passage of H.R. 1191, the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act, ensures that sanctions on Iran remain in place while Congress considers the proposal, and enables Congress to reject any deal negotiated by the President.
"I was proud to support a measure cutting off financial and other support for the terrorist group Hezbollah, which has engaged in a decades-long campaign of attacks against our ally Israel and ," LaMalfa added. "This measure uses every tool at our disposal to identify and shut down Hezbollah's support network and penalize anyone that chooses to ally themselves with terrorists who attack civilians and threaten our way of life."
Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California's First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
