Rep. LaMalfa Receives “A” Rating from Nonpartisan, Pro-privacy Group “Stand Against Spying”

July 1, 2014

Washington, DC – Washington, DC – Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) today announced that he had received an A rating from the national pro-privacy group, Stand Against Spying. An umbrella organization whose membership ranges from FreedomWorks to the Electronic Freedom Foundation, Stand Against Spying advocates against the mass surveillance of Americans' telephone and Internet activity by the federal government.

"Our nation's founders were subjected to constant searches and seizures of their property by British soldiers and wisely prohibited such activity in the Bill of Rights. This administration's continued support for what I believe are unconstitutional searches of Americans' data is abhorrent, and I'll continue to oppose it at every opportunity," said LaMalfa. "Respect for the Bill of Rights and the Constitution aren't partisan issues and I'm pleased to work with anyone who believes that Americans' rights must be respected."

The rating is based upon lawmaker's actions on pro-privacy measures, all of which LaMalfa supported, including:

  • Voting for the Amash amendment to H.R. 2397 (Department of Defense Appropriations Act): This amendment sought to end authority for the NSA's blanket collection of records under the Patriot Act.
  • Co-sponsoring the original USA FREEDOM Act, H.R.3361: This bill is designed to stop mass surveillance and includes key transparency and oversight reforms.
  • Voting for the Sensenbrenner-Massie-Lofgren to H.R. 4870 (Department of Defense Appropriations Act): Closes loopholes used by the NSA to gather information on Americans by claiming to surveil foreign citizens.

LaMalfa also passed an amendment to a national cyber-security bill, H.R. 624, prohibiting the use of authority granted by the bill for domestic surveillance of Americans.

Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California's First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
