LaMalfa Votes Against First Step Act

December 20, 2018
(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued the following statement after voting against S.756, the First Step Act.
LaMalfa said: "While I fully support increasing access to rehabilitation opportunities to incarcerated inmates in the federal prison system, I have concerns that the reform sentencing laws in this bill may compromise the safety of our communities. Criminals convicted of violent crimes would have the opportunity to achieve ‘low risk' status and become eligible for early release. California already has similar laws in place – Propositions 47 and 57 – which have hamstrung law enforcement and caused a significant uptick in crime. Without amendments to address these and other concerns, I could not support this legislation."
Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California's First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
