LaMalfa Statement on Speaker Paul Ryan Announcing Retirement

April 11, 2018

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) issued the following statement after House Speaker Paul Ryan's announcement that he will not seek reelection after this year.

LaMalfa said: "Nearly three years ago, Speaker Ryan took the reins of a divided House of Representatives and brought us together as only he could. The respect he showed to his colleagues on a daily basis and the determination with which he went about his job have earned him the admiration of all who've worked with him. During his time as Speaker, Paul has calmly guided our institution through some rough waters and fought many uphill battles to pass conservative policies that will have a real impact on our nation. Without Paul Ryan, tax reform simply would not have been possible. I consider myself fortunate to have served with Speaker Ryan and even more so to call him a friend. His decision to put his family first at this time is one that I greatly respect, and I know it's the right decision for him and his family. I'm grateful for the open and honest effort that he dedicated to this institution, both as our Speaker and over the course of his years in Congress, and I wish him the best of luck in whatever the future holds. For now, there is plenty of work to be done before his term is up."

Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California's First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
