Members of Congress presented a Congressional Gold Medal in honor of members of World War II's first special service force on Tuesday, and among those honored was Paradise resident Stan McEtchin.
The first special force was formed in 1942 and was a special unit of 1800 soldiers. It was the only unit in World War II comprised of troops from both the United States and Canada.
House Speaker John Boehner offered his appreciation for the unit, whose bravery contributed to the end of World War II.
McEtchin, pictured above with North State Congressman Doug LaMalfa lives in Paradise. He told Action News Now, he doesn't feel he deserves the recognition because he was just a Private, but said he lost at least two close friends in the war.
These days when McEtchin is not accepting Congressional Medals he welds scrap metal pieces together to create elaborate pieces of art, which can be seen on his property on Wayland Road.
