Dear Friend,
Today we celebrate our freedom. Two hundred and thirty nine years ago, delegates of the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, formally breaking ties with Britain to become a new nation.
The fight for American independence was won during the Revolutionary War, but the battle for liberty is ongoing. Ronald Reagan once stated that "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same." We must ensure freedom is protected and preserved in our homes, schools, places of worship, and halls of government across this nation.
Today is also a time to thank those who have and continue to volunteer their lives to protect our freedoms, and this includes ensuring our veterans are well-cared for when they return. That’s why the House of Representatives has made veterans a priority in the 114th Congress. This past year I have worked to shed light on dysfunction in the VA by calling for a report from Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General (OIG), questioning VA officials during Veterans Affairs Committee hearing, and supporting legislation to increase accountability in leadership. Our service men and women should receive the quality care that they deserve.
