House Passes Measure Guaranteeing In-State Tuition for Military Personnel

Washington, DC – Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) today voted in favor of a bill ensuring that military personnel qualify for in-state tuition wherever in the nation they are stationed. The bill, HR 357, requires public universities and colleges to offer military personnel in-state tuition in order to be eligible for GI Bill funding. The bill passed with unanimous support and will now be considered by the Senate.

"Men and women in uniform have little control over where they are assigned, and it's imperative that we do everything we can to ensure that they are able to pursue higher education wherever they are stationed," said LaMalfa. "This reasonable bill guarantees that our men and women in uniform can access higher education as rapidly and inexpensively as possible. Unfortunately, we've seen similar proposals in California shot down by Democrats claiming concerns about cost, even as the state granted illegal immigrants in-state tuition and grants at a cost of as much as $65 million. This bill will right that wrong."

Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California's First Congressional District, including Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties.
