Rep. LaMalfa Responds to President Obama’s Unlawful Amnesty Plan

November 21, 2014

Washington, DC – Rep. LaMalfa (R-CA) released the following statement in response to President Obama's announced plan to take executive action and grant amnesty to up to 5 million illegal immigrants.

"Last night, our country witnessed an unparalleled attack on our rule of the law and the exact founding principles that remain at the core of our nation's political system. We are a nation of laws, with a government that serves to answer to the people, not one man," said LaMalfa. "This is not about partisan gridlock in Washington or the lofty rhetoric justifying executive rulemaking, this is about a President whose power must be checked. This is about a President who continues to ignore our nation's laws to get his way by circumventing the only branch of government actually authorized to write and enact laws."

"Earlier this month, the President's amnesty plan was on the ballot, and was unambiguously rejected by the American voters," continued LaMalfa. "Our government is not designed to work by executive fiat and Congress cannot allow such a blatant abuse of power. I and the majority in both houses will work to defund this action and block it in every way."

Rep. LaMalfa joined with more than 60 House Republicans in requesting the House Appropriations Committee to include language in the upcoming appropriations legislation that would prohibit funding from being used to implement an executive amnesty program without congressional approval.
